Cherry’s Story
On 21st April 2024, I will be participating in the TCS London Marathon as part of #TeamSamaritans, the Official Charity of the Year.
Samaritans is a vital organization that provides support to individuals in need. They respond to a call for help every 10 seconds, offering assistance to those who are struggling to cope. Their dedicated volunteers work tirelessly, ensuring that there is always someone available to lend a listening ear. However, there is still more work to be done. Samaritans aims to reduce the number of suicides, as it remains the leading cause of death among young people aged 16-24 and men under 50. By raising awareness and funds, we can help bring about change.
In December 2013, I experienced the devastating loss of a loved one who took their own life. The shock and pain were immeasurable. I wish they had known about the support available through Samaritans and reached out for help. Since then, I have faced my own mental health struggles while trying to come to terms with the loss. Running has become a way for me to cope and channel my emotions towards positive outcomes. I am grateful for the opportunity to use my passion for running to raise awareness and much-needed funds for this incredible charity. It is time to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations.
Every step I take and every pound we raise can make a difference. The funds raised will help train more volunteers, answer more calls for help, and ultimately, save lives. By participating in the 2024 TCS London Marathon with Samaritans as the Official Charity of the Year, I hope to inspire millions of people facing their own challenges, letting them know that they are not alone.
I am immensely grateful for any donation, no matter the size. Your support means the world to me.
Thank you,
Cherry xx

Mark Story
In July 2022 my beautiful wife Tracey was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. Within just 3 weeks we were told the devastating news that the cancer was so aggressive that nothing more could be done.
We were fortunate to get Tracey transferred to St Helena Hospice in Colchester where we spent our final days together.
The kindness and compassion shown to us by everyone at St Helena was amazing; allowing us to spend quality time together as a family while providing outstanding care for Tracey. In our time there my youngest daughter was introduced to the hospice’s counsellors who helped her enormously, especially after Tracey passed away.
The last year has been hard for the family but it would have been so much harder without the support of everyone at St Helena.
I am running the London Marathon 2024 to raise much needed funds, and awareness, so that other families can be supported by St Helena Hospice in the fantastic way they helped mine.
All St Helena Hospice services and bereavement support are provided free of charge, however they are not free to provide; it costs £30,000 per day to provide the care. While 37% of St Helena Hospice’s funding comes from the NHS, it relies on the generosity of the community to raise the remaining 63% through donations, fundraising, visiting its charity shops, playing its lottery and leaving gifts in Wills.
Any donations, no matter how much, would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.
